ROE V. WADE WAS OVERTURNED ONE YEAR AGO, TODAY.

One Year after the fall of roe v. wade

June 24th, 2023

One year ago today, June 24th, 2022, the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization overturned Roe v. Wade, redefining the landscape of abortion access and reproductive healthcare and wrenching our country back in time.

As I reflect on the last year and the impact of Dobbs, I think back to the summer of 1984 when I first started with Planned Parenthood in Chicago. As a young gay man, I was all too familiar with the social stigma and difficulty associated with finding inclusive, respectful healthcare.

My work with abortion patients over the next several years gave me a fuller understanding of the life-altering consequences of an unintended or health-threatening pregnancy and the necessity of reproductive healthcare.

For almost four decades, I have worked with countless professionals and volunteers to provide quality, affordable abortion healthcare. We fought back against anti-choice political assaults as time and resources allowed, but our predominant focus remained on patients and providing care.

Last year, under increasingly restrictive anti-abortion regulations and in anticipation of Dobbs, I joined several leaders in co-founding a new organization with the sole mission of electing pro-choice candidates on the state level. We are focused on dismantling the powerful and far-reaching network of anti-choice interest groups and politicians who are determined to extinguish abortion healthcare nationwide.

On this, the first anniversary of Dobbs, I ask you to join me in building political power for reproductive rights in every state. In too many states that have already lost abortion access, there are no existing organizations or efforts to fight back at the ballot box. There is no time to waste.

A generous donor has committed a $25,000 matching contribution for funds raised through the anniversary of the Dobbs decision, and we are nearly there. Help us close the gap and re-establish abortion access state-by-state by committing just $10, $25, $50, or - in recognition of 1973’s Roe v. Wade decision - $73 a month.

In solidarity,

Bryan Howard
